Harry Kane's Golden Nightmare: Penalty Miss as Bayern Held 2-2 by Dortmund
Harry Kane missed a 56th-minute penalty and hit the post as Bayern drew 2-2 with Dortmund, Fabio Silva's 89th-minute goal keeping both level on 18 points.
Harry Kane's first match as a Ballon d'Or winner turned into a golden nightmare on Saturday. The England captain missed a 56th-minute penalty against the crossbar, hit the post, and watched Fabio Silva snatch an 89th-minute equaliser as Bayern Munich drew 2-2 with Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker at the Allianz Arena.
Harry Kane's Night: Bar, Post and an Assist
Kane had the Ballon d'Or shown to the Allianz Arena crowd before kick-off, five days after winning football's most prestigious individual award in London on Monday. He had been an unused substitute in Bayern's 6-1 German Cup win at Magdeburg on Wednesday, and this was his first appearance since the ceremony. It did not go to plan.
With Bayern 1-0 up, Kane stepped up in the 56th minute after Felix Nmecha handled his shot, only to rifle the spot-kick against the crossbar. It was just his second missed penalty in 27 Bundesliga attempts, after firing over against Wolfsburg in May. Kane later hit the post in the 75th minute and finished without a single shot on target from six attempts, yet still played a part in Bayern's second goal, heading Kimmich's cross back across goal for Dayot Upamecano to prod home.
How Bayern vs Dortmund Unfolded
Dortmund thought they had taken the lead when Jobe Bellingham scored from close range, but VAR overturned the goal for offside, and Bayern made them pay immediately. Konrad Laimer pounced on a poor Nmecha pass, charged upfield and scored on the rebound in the 38th minute after Gregor Kobel blocked his first effort.
The goal sequence
- 38' — Konrad Laimer puts Bayern 1-0 up on the rebound
- 56' — Kane's penalty hits the crossbar
- 60' — Serhou Guirassy levels for Dortmund
- 66' — Dayot Upamecano restores Bayern's lead from Kane's assist
- 89' — Fabio Silva equalises for Dortmund
Guirassy's leveller came four minutes after Kane's miss, when Nico Schlotterbeck set up Carney Chukwuemeka to square for the Guinean to score at the near post. Upamecano's reply lasted barely 20 minutes: substitute Konstantinos Karetsas charged down Aleksandar Pavlovic's clearance in the closing stages, allowing Silva to fire low into the far corner and send the Dortmund fans wild.
What the Draw Means: Level on 18 Points at the Top
The result leaves both sides level on 18 points after eight Bundesliga games, with defending champions Bayern top on goal difference, and both still unbeaten. Bayern hit the woodwork four times in all — Kane's penalty and post, plus substitute Lennart Karl's stoppage-time shot off the crossbar — in a frustrating afternoon for the champions, who were also without the injured Serge Gnabry and Michael Olise and had coach Vincent Kompany recovering after his collapse last week.
Dortmund coach Niko Kovac praised his side's belief afterwards, saying they "never stopped believing in ourselves" and calling it a "well-deserved point" after coming back twice in Munich. For Kane, the night was a reminder that even a Ballon d'Or cannot bend a football match to your will. The golden boy had a nightmare — and the title race is tighter for it.
