Alex Scott to Chelsea: Why the Blues Are 'Increasingly Confident' of a £100m January Deal
The Alex Scott Chelsea transfer saga is heading for a January conclusion. According to transfer reporter Ben Jacobs, Chelsea are now "increasingly confident" of signing the Bournemouth midfielder in the winter window, with fresh talks already underway between the two clubs. The fee, however, will be enormous: Bournemouth want £100m or more.
Alex Scott Chelsea transfer: how January became inevitable
Chelsea's need is obvious. After Enzo Fernández left for Manchester City on summer deadline day, and with Andrey Santos sold to Manchester United, the Blues are far lighter in midfield than they were last season. Scott, 23, has been their preferred replacement since the summer — but they could not get a deal done before the deadline.
Bournemouth rejected Chelsea bids over £60m in the summer, including a £64m offer, and insisted the midfielder was not for sale. That stance has now relaxed. After lengthy talks with Scott's representatives, the Cherries are willing to sanction a January deal if their asking price of €120m (£100m) is met.
Chelsea, who face Manchester United on Saturday, have made Scott their dream midfield signing ahead of fellow targets Manu Koné of Roma and Lamine Camara of Monaco. Chelsea journalist Simon Phillips has even described a January transfer as "inevitable."
Why Bournemouth are finally open to selling
Two things changed Bournemouth's mind. First, Scott has turned down several contract extension offers, including the chance to become the club's highest-paid player. His current deal runs to 2028, but the club know a player who keeps refusing new terms cannot be held forever.
Second, Bournemouth's position has softened with results. Back-to-back wins over Sunderland and Manchester United have eased their relegation fears, and the club will only do January business if they are clear of danger. The Cherries remain hopeful of keeping their star, but owner Bill Foley's policy of regularly offering contracts worth at least £100,000 a week has not convinced Scott to stay.
The price tag and the competition
- Asking price: £100m-plus (€120m), with no intention of lowering demands mid-season.
- Summer bids rejected: multiple offers over £60m, including £64m.
- Contract: runs to 2028; several extension offers turned down.
- Current status: sidelined with a muscle injury.
- Competition: Liverpool hold an interest but are less urgent; Arsenal have also been linked.
Liverpool's interest is real — Scott played under Reds boss Andoni Iraola at Bournemouth — but reports say strengthening midfield is not currently a priority at Anfield. That leaves Chelsea in the clear as favourites, with fresh talks already progressing.
What Scott would bring to Chelsea
Scott joined Bournemouth from Bristol City in the summer of 2023 for £25m and has since become one of the Premier League's most versatile, physically robust and intelligent midfielders. He is an England international, comfortable dictating play from deep or driving forward, and exactly the profile Chelsea have lacked since Fernández's departure.
For Bournemouth, a £100m sale would be a record windfall — and a painful admission that even their best-laid plans cannot hold a player determined to step up. For Chelsea, it would be the statement signing of the January window. The talks are underway, the confidence is growing, and January is coming fast.
