Liverpool vs Manchester City Preview: Title Race Showdown at Anfield

Sunday night brings the fixture every football fan has been waiting for: Liverpool vs Manchester City at Anfield, kicking off at 8:30 PM PKT. It is first against sixth, the league's perfect leaders against a wounded giant — and it is City's first match since the verdict that shook English football.

Manchester City travel to Merseyside with five wins from five, sitting top of the Premier League on 15 points. But this is no ordinary away day. It is their first game since an independent commission found the club guilty of 114 of 115 financial charges, with the club lodging an appeal and reports of settlement talks in the background. All eyes will be on how Enzo Maresca's players handle the most hostile atmosphere in the country with the sport's biggest off-field story swirling around them.

Liverpool, sixth with nine points, are desperate to close the gap — but Andoni Iraola's preparations have been wrecked by the international break. Alexander Isak left Sweden's squad with a thigh injury and is out, while Cody Gakpo picked up an ankle problem in the Netherlands camp. With Hugo Ekitike also sidelined, Liverpool's attacking options are stretched dangerously thin, and the hosts may have to rely on their young forwards in the biggest game of their season.

There is better news for the visitors. Erling Haaland is fit and ready. After limping off for Norway against Portugal, Maresca confirmed his star striker will lead the line: "He's good... ready for Anfield." Haaland already has five league goals this season and scored a hat-trick the last time these two sides met in the FA Cup quarter-final.

City will be without Phil Foden, who serves the final match of his three-game suspension, while Antoine Semenyo and Nico O'Reilly are doubts after pulling out of international duty. For Liverpool, Alisson remains their most important player — the Brazilian will need the game of his life if the hosts are to keep City out.

The key battle is obvious: can Liverpool's patched-up attack find a way past a City defence marshalled by Ruben Dias and Marc Guehi? If the hosts draw a blank, City's perfect start rolls on and the gap at the top stretches to nine points. But Anfield on a Sunday night has humbled better teams than this one.

Both sides come into this in very different moods to Manchester United and Tottenham, who played out a dramatic 1-1 draw on Saturday — yet the pressure at the top is just as intense.

Prediction: City's depth and Haaland's form make them narrow favourites, but expect a ferocious atmosphere to drag Liverpool into it. A score draw would not surprise anyone.

Kick-off: Sunday, 8:30 PM PKT, live on Sky Sports.
