Liverpool vs Man City Preview: Anfield Braces for a Title-Race Blockbuster
Sunday afternoon at Anfield has produced some of the Premier League's greatest occasions, and this weekend's meeting between Liverpool and Manchester City — 4:30pm BST on October 11 — has all the ingredients of another classic, with an edge that nothing on the pitch can match.
City arrive on Merseyside with a perfect record: five wins from five, 15 points, top of the table. Erling Haaland asked to come off with fatigue while on Norway duty in the 2-1 defeat to Portugal, but all signs point to the striker being fit to lead the line — a relief for Enzo Maresca, who has no like-for-like backup. Phil Foden is suspended after his red card in the Manchester derby, while Antoine Semenyo and Nico O'Reilly are injury doubts.
Liverpool are unbeaten under Andoni Iraola — two wins and three draws from five — but sit sixth, six points off the pace, and are still waiting for a first home league win of the season. Their preparations were hit by the international break: Alexander Isak (thigh) and Cody Gakpo (ankle) are doubts after returning early from national duty, and defender Jeremy Jacquet is also a concern. Conor Bradley and Hugo Ekitike remain long-term absentees.
Then there is the cloud over the visitors. An independent Premier League commission found Manchester City guilty of financial-rule breaches covering 2009 to 2018; the club deny wrongdoing and have appealed, with no sporting sanction imposed yet. Expect a hostile Anfield — this is City's first trip to a rival ground since the verdict landed.
Tactically it is a fascinating duel between two new managers: Iraola's intense pressing against Maresca's controlled possession. Both sides have looked vulnerable to counter-attacks this season, which usually means goals. City won the last meeting 4-0 in the FA Cup; Liverpool won the last league clash at Anfield 2-1.
Prediction: Liverpool 2-2 Manchester City. Too much attacking talent on both sides, too many defensive doubts — the points get shared in a thriller.
