Ronaldo Pays Emotional Tribute to Messi After Argentina Farewell: "You've Made History That Will Last Forever"
For nearly two decades they have been rivals, compared in every argument about the greatest of all time. But when Lionel Messi said goodbye to Argentina, Cristiano Ronaldo answered with something else entirely: respect.
After Messi's emotional farewell at the Estadio Monumental — a 3-0 win over Benin in front of more than 85,000 people, his 126th international goal and his 208th cap — the Argentina captain posted a farewell message on Instagram: "Yesterday was my last game, and I already miss wearing the blue and white…" Among the millions of replies, one stood out. Cristiano Ronaldo wrote: "Leo, after so many years of defending your country, you've made history that will last forever. I have the utmost respect for what you've accomplished with Argentina. A hug." (Read our full report on Messi's farewell night at the Monumental.)
It was a short message, but it said a lot. The two men have shared football's biggest stages for almost twenty years — Ballon d'Or podiums, Champions League finals, El Clásico battles — and through it all, their rivalry was always matched by a quiet mutual admiration. Ronaldo's tribute made that public once again, at the exact moment the football world was mourning the end of Messi's Argentina story.
The timing made the message even more striking. Ronaldo himself is living through one of the toughest weeks of his international career — benched for the full 90 minutes of Portugal's 2-1 win over Norway, then at the centre of a public dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus that ended with a ~2000-word statement and his departure from the Portugal camp. (Catch up on the Ronaldo–Jesus saga here.) One farewell full of tears of joy; one full of anger. And yet, in the middle of his own storm, Ronaldo found the words for his old rival.
This is not new between them. Back in August, Ronaldo sent Messi condolences after the death of Messi's father. Over the years both have repeatedly spoken warmly about the other in interviews — Ronaldo once said Messi made him a better player, and Messi has always acknowledged Ronaldo's relentless drive. The rivalry was real, but so is the respect.
In his farewell post, Messi also remembered Diego Maradona, writing that Maradona "helped us both by being here with us and also from heaven" — a nod to the two men who defined Argentine football across generations. Ronaldo's reply, ending with that simple "A hug," felt like a closing line to an era: two giants, two very different farewells, one shared history.
The GOAT debate will never end. But on the night football said goodbye to Messi the Argentina player, even Cristiano Ronaldo stood up and applauded.
