Manchester United's Crisis Deepens as 10-Man Spurs Snatch Late Draw at Old Trafford

Manchester United's miserable season hit a new low on Saturday as 10-man Tottenham snatched a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford with virtually the last kick of the game.

United took the lead in the 73rd minute through Bryan Mbeumo, who finished off Matheus Cunha's assist to spark hope of a much-needed win. When Rodrigo Bentancur was shown a straight red card in the 78th minute — just 12 minutes after coming on — for a headbutt on Luke Shaw, three points looked certain. But Spurs refused to fold, and in the second minute of stoppage time Dominic Solanke powered home Sandro Tonali's cross to stun the home crowd into silence.

The boos that rang around Old Trafford at full time told the story. This is now United's worst start to a league season in around 40 years — just six points from six games — and Michael Carrick admitted afterwards that the fans' frustration "hurt". It is also the second time this season United have dropped points from a winning position in stoppage time, and the second time they have failed to beat a side reduced to 10 men.

For Tottenham, sitting 18th and winless in six despite spending over £300m in the summer, the point feels like a small victory snatched from despair. But with both clubs stuck in the bottom half, the pressure is mounting on everyone involved.

United's board, meanwhile, continue to watch the market for attacking reinforcements — with Arsenal also hunting a striker after their move for Julian Alvarez. But new signings will not fix a team that cannot see out games.

As we noted in our Manchester United vs Tottenham preview, neither side could afford to lose this one. In the end, neither won — and neither manager will sleep easily tonight.
