Lucas Hernandez Ends Long Goal Wait With Header Against Barcelona

Lucas Hernandez picked the perfect night to end his long wait for a goal. The defender's second-half header helped Paris Saint-Germain beat Barcelona 4-2 in a Champions League classic at the Parc des Princes on matchday 3.

It was not just any goal. The Lucas Hernandez goal was his first since February 2024, when he scored for PSG against Nantes in Ligue 1 — a drought of well over two and a half years, finally broken on the biggest stage.

Lucas Hernandez Goal Restores PSG's Lead

The header arrived at a crucial moment in the PSG vs Barcelona thriller. Barcelona had levelled at 1-1 through 19-year-old Xavi Espart, and the game was in the balance when Hernández rose to meet Désiré Doué's delivery on 72 minutes.

His finish made it 2-1 and swung the momentum back towards the hosts. Although Lamine Yamal equalised again, late goals from Vitinha and Fabián Ruiz completed a famous 4-2 victory.

  • 38' — Doué opens the scoring for PSG (1-0)
  • 55' — Espart scores his first Champions League goal (1-1)
  • 72' — Lucas Hernandez heads PSG back in front (2-1)
  • 79' — Yamal levels for Barcelona (2-2)
  • 81' — Vitinha restores the lead (3-2)
  • 86' — Fabián Ruiz seals the win (4-2)

Stepping Up With Mendes Missing

Hernández's performance mattered even more because of who was missing. PSG went into the match without first-choice left-back Nuno Mendes, who had already been ruled out of the Barca clash, and the defence had to be reshuffled again when Marquinhos went off at 59 minutes.

Hernández himself did not finish the match — he was substituted off at 78 minutes — but by then his work was done. A clean defensive shift and the goal that turned the game is some contribution from a player asked to step up.

Why This Goal Meant So Much

Defenders measure their careers in clean sheets, not goals, but a first goal since February 2024 is a milestone worth celebrating. That it came in a Champions League win over Barcelona, in front of a packed Parc des Princes, makes it one Hernández will never forget.

A Night PSG Will Remember

Barcelona's first defeat of the season will dominate the headlines, and rightly so. But inside the PSG dressing room, one of the loudest cheers will be reserved for Lucas Hernandez.

On a night when injuries to Ousmane Dembélé, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Marquinhos tested PSG's depth to the limit, their defender stepped forward with the header that set up a famous victory. The long wait was worth it.

There is a pleasing symmetry to the goal, too. Doué, whose opener had set the tone for the evening, turned provider for the header — a young attacker and a senior defender combining at exactly the moment PSG needed it most in this Champions League classic.
