UCL Matchday 2 Double-Header Preview: Crisis-Hit United Face Atletico Test as Arsenal Host Lille
Tuesday night in the Champions League serves up a fascinating double-header for English clubs — both kicking off at 8pm BST, midnight Pakistan time. Manchester United travel to the Riyadh Air Metropolitano to face Atletico Madrid with their season wobbling, while Arsenal welcome Lille to the Emirates aiming to extend a remarkable European winning run.
Atletico Madrid vs Manchester United is the tie of the night. United arrive in the Spanish capital in genuine crisis: six points from six Premier League games, their worst league start in 40 years, sitting 13th in the table after the 1-1 draw with 10-man Tottenham that piled more pressure on Michael Carrick less than six months into his permanent reign.
Carrick's problems have deepened into a full injury crisis. Kobbie Mainoo and Luke Shaw — arguably United's two most important players this season — did not travel after picking up issues against Spurs, joining Benjamin Sesko (shin), Noussair Mazraoui, Patrick Dorgu and Manuel Ugarte (knee surgery) on the sidelines. Six players out. The one boost is Matthijs de Ligt, back in a matchday squad for the first time in almost a year, while Diogo Dalot may have to fill in at left-back.
Off the pitch, the noise is growing. Reports in Italy have claimed Antonio Conte — who Fabrizio Romano says is "absolutely ready to restart" after rejecting offers from Saudi Arabia and Turkey — is being lined up as a potential replacement, though such talk remains firmly in the realm of speculation for now. Nothing lifts pressure like a big European away win, and Carrick knows this Madrid trip is a defining night for his tenure.
Atletico, though, are no soft touch. Diego Simeone's side sit second in La Liga, five points behind Barcelona, fresh from a feisty 2-1 derby win over Real Madrid. They lost 2-1 at Liverpool on matchday one — Marcos Llorente scoring before Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister replied — so they need a home result. Alex Baena and Jonathan David have been running the show, and Simeone will fancy his experienced side against United's patched-up defence. One subplot: Matheus Cunha, United's summer signing, returns to face his old club. The last meeting in Madrid, back in February 2022, ended 1-1.
Prediction: Atletico Madrid 2-1 Manchester United. Too many absences, too hostile an atmosphere — United's winless run stretches to five.
Arsenal vs Lille looks far more straightforward on paper. This is the first-ever competitive meeting between the clubs, and Arsenal bring a staggering record: 13 consecutive Champions League league-phase victories, after edging Napoli 1-0 on matchday one through Martin Odegaard.
Mikel Arteta has his own injury headaches — Piero Hincapie (ankle, carried off in the post-Leeds warm-down) and Martin Zubimendi (ankle) are out for weeks, joining William Saliba (back) and Christos Tzolis (hamstring). But the squad is deep enough to cope: Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and Ezri Konsa are all available, and Viktor Gyokeres — four goals in four for Sweden over the break — leads the line.
Lille, under Davide Ancelotti, are second in Ligue 1 but reeling in Europe after throwing away two leads in a 3-2 home defeat to Real Betis. Ethan Mbappe is suspended and injured, Tiago Santos and Hamza Igamane are out with ACL tears, and the French side have lost their last eight away games against English clubs. The romantic storyline is Olivier Giroud, 40, back at the Emirates with the club where he became a fan favourite — though Ayase Ueda is expected to start ahead of him.
Prediction: Arsenal 2-0 Lille. The winning run becomes 14.
