Gvardiol Tops Barcelona's January Wishlist as Flick Demands a New Centre-Back

Gvardiol Tops Barcelona's January Wishlist as Flick Demands a New Centre-Back

Gvardiol Barcelona January plans put the Man City star top of Barça's defensive wishlist, but his 2031 deal means only a huge City sanction could open the door.

The Gvardiol Barcelona January wishlist has a clear name at the top of it: Joško Gvardiol. According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have decided to strengthen their defence in the January transfer window after consecutive defeats against Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid exposed concerns over their defensive depth. The Catalan club want an experienced centre-back capable of making an immediate impact — and the Manchester City star is their dream target.

Gvardiol Barcelona January: the dream at the top of the list

Gvardiol ticks every box for Barcelona. The 24-year-old Croatian can play at centre-back and at left-back, giving Hansi Flick cover in two positions for the price of one signing. He also has the approval of the club's decision-makers, and his reputation as one of Europe's best young defenders is not in doubt.

There is, however, a very large catch. Gvardiol signed a contract extension with Manchester City last summer that runs until 2031, leaving the Premier League club in a commanding negotiating position. City's director of football Hugo Viana has underlined the club's stance, saying: "Manchester City are committed to keeping our best talent." No negotiations between the clubs have been reported, and nothing suggests the player has agreed to leave.

Why Barcelona need a defender now

The timing is no accident. Barcelona's recent losses to PSG and Real Madrid, coupled with injuries at the back, have strengthened the club's determination to act in January rather than wait until the summer. Flick himself has publicly acknowledged the whispers, saying simply that if a player who improves the squad is available, he is for signing him.

Barcelona's spending capacity will depend on player departures and the money raised, and reports note the club have significant funds available after their failed pursuit of Julián Álvarez. Even so, a Gvardiol deal would need something extraordinary to happen first.

The four names on Barcelona's list

Mundo Deportivo's report names four centre-backs on Barcelona's radar. Gvardiol leads it, but the other three show just how wide — and how difficult — the search really is:

  • Joško Gvardiol (Man City) — the dream signing, but tied to City until 2031 and almost impossible to prise away in January.
  • Alessandro Bastoni (Inter Milan) — admired for years, but Inter are unlikely to part with their best defender mid-season.
  • Lisandro Martínez (Man Utd) — the most realistic option, with his contract expiring next June, though his injury record is a concern.
  • Natan (Real Betis) — available for around €30 million and on Barça's list for some time.

One report even names Stuttgart's Finn Jeltsch as a preferred option of Flick's, which shows how seriously Barcelona are taking the search. Defensive injury problems are not unique to Catalonia, either — Arsenal head to Anfield this weekend without their own defensive leader, as our William Saliba injury report explains.

Why a deal looks near-impossible

The only realistic opening for Barcelona, according to Mundo Deportivo, would be a significant sporting sanction against Manchester City before the January window closes. Reports say City have been found guilty of serious financial irregularities, but no punishment has been finalised — and even a points deduction or relegation would not automatically produce a transfer. Barcelona would still need sufficient funds, acceptable terms with City, and Gvardiol's own agreement.

That is why this story must be read as a wishlist, not a transfer in motion. The report presents Gvardiol as a difficult target rather than an imminent signing, and it does not establish his availability, any negotiations between the clubs, or an agreement from the player to leave.

The realistic fallback

If Gvardiol proves out of reach, the focus will shift to the more attainable names. Martínez, out of contract next summer, is the obvious one — and fresh reports on Saturday claim Atlético Madrid are also interested in the Argentine, alongside Inter, Roma and Como. Natan's €30 million price tag makes him the most straightforward deal of the four.

Either way, Barcelona's January business looks set to be defined by their defence.

What happens next

Barcelona's immediate priority is a defender ready to contribute in the second half of the season, and Gvardiol remains the name at the top of that list. Whether anything moves will depend on events at Manchester City, on player sales at Camp Nou, and on whether the club's finances allow a January swing at all.

For now, the Gvardiol story is a statement of intent as much as a transfer rumour: Barcelona know their weakness, they know their dream signing, and they know how hard it will be to get him. In a week already full of transfer movement, our Alex Scott to Chelsea report shows how quickly a long-running saga can turn into a done deal — but Gvardiol is nowhere near that stage yet.
