Leeds vs Man United Preview: Carrick's Survival Sunday at a Ferocious Elland Road

This is no ordinary rivalry game. When Manchester United walk out at Elland Road on Sunday evening — 14:00 BST, 18:00 PKT — it will be with Michael Carrick's future hanging over every minute, after a week in which Antonio Conte's camp made it known the Italian is ready to replace him. United arrive in West Yorkshire in genuine crisis. Five matches without a win. Thirteenth in the table with six points from six. A Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Brighton after surrendering a two-goal fightback at Old Trafford. And a dressing room still settling after Lisandro Martinez's bombshell interview — though the Argentine has since apologised, been fined, and is available for selection. The last two outings tell the story. Against Spurs, Bryan Mbeumo's 73rd-minute strike looked to have won it before Bentancur's red card for headbutting Luke Shaw flipped the game, and Dominic Solanke snatched a 92nd-minute equaliser against ten men. Then came the bruising 2-0 Champions League defeat at Atletico Madrid, where Pablo Barrios struck inside a minute and Leny Yoro's straight red card killed any hope of a comeback. Leeds, meanwhile, will smell blood. They lost 2-1 to Arsenal last time out, but this fixture needs no extra motivation — a home crowd at full fury, a wounded giant in town, and the chance to deepen the crisis of their most hated rivals. For Carrick, the maths is brutal and simple. Conte is waiting, the board's patience is wearing thin despite public denials, and another defeat at Elland Road may leave the hierarchy with no choice. Win, and the noise dies down — at least for a week. Lose, and Monday morning could bring the call Conte's camp is waiting for. One thing is certain: at 18:00 PKT on Sunday, Elland Road will be the loudest, most hostile ground in England. Carrick must survive it — or his United reign may not survive the weekend.
