Ballon d'Or 2026: Lamine Yamal vs Harry Kane — Football's Tightest Race in Years
On October 26, the Ballon d'Or leaves Paris for the first time in its history. The 70th edition of football's most prestigious individual award will be presented at the London Palladium — a nod to Sir Stanley Matthews, the first winner back in 1956 — and fittingly, an Englishman could lift it for the first time since Michael Owen in 2001.
The race is a two-horse contest: Lamine Yamal versus Harry Kane. Bookmakers make the Barcelona winger the narrow favourite at around 10/11, with Kane at 6/5; prediction markets are even tighter, with Kane edging it at 48% to Yamal's 43.5%. Voting closed on September 28, so the odds now reflect educated guesses about how 100 journalists voted — not new performances.
Kane's case is built on historic volume: 73 goals in 65 games for Bayern Munich and England, the Bundesliga title, the DFB-Pokal and the European Golden Shoe. At 33, he has been world-class for a decade — this would be the crowning of a career, not just a season. Even his Bayern team-mate Josip Stanisic has publicly backed him, praising the defensive work and pressing that never make the highlight reels.
Yamal's case is built on silverware and stardust. At 19, he won La Liga and its Player of the Season award with Barcelona, then played every minute of the World Cup final as Spain lifted the trophy — 24 goals and 17 assists in 45 club games. He has started this season exactly where he left off, scoring in all three of Spain's Nations League games during the international break. Zlatan Ibrahimovic has already picked his winner: Yamal has the "magic" that makes people dream.
What makes this race fascinating is what it represents: the first Ballon d'Or of the post-Messi-Ronaldo era that feels like a genuine changing of the guard. Kylian Mbappe, despite winning the Champions League with Real Madrid, is a distant third — the former Ballon d'Or chief Pascal Ferre even said he would not vote for him. The crown of Ousmane Dembele, the 2025 winner, will pass to a new king in London.
Verdict: Yamal's World Cup winner's medal is the tiebreaker. The teenager makes history at the Palladium.
