Manchester City vs PSG Preview: European Champions Collide at the Etihad

Wednesday night at the Etihad brings the tie of the Champions League league phase so far: Manchester City against Paris Saint-Germain, the back-to-back European champions. Kick-off is 8pm BST, midnight Pakistan time, and it is a meeting of the two most devastating attacking sides on the continent.

City could hardly be in better shape. Enzo Maresca's side have won eight from eight in all competitions, sit top of the Premier League, and followed up their Anfield preview billing with a stunning 3-0 win at Liverpool on Sunday — Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki all scoring after Ryan Gravenberch's red card. They opened their European campaign with a 2-0 win at Porto.

Remarkably, Maresca has no injury concerns at all. Phil Foden is available again after serving a three-match domestic ban — he is eligible in Europe — while Doku is pushing for a start after his Anfield heroics off the bench. Haaland, scorer of eight in eight this season, could set new Champions League scoring records if he finds the net against PSG.

The subplots are irresistible. Gianluigi Donnarumma faces his former club, where he won four Ligue 1 titles and the Champions League between 2021 and 2025 before moving to Manchester. And then there is the golden-boot race within the race: Haaland against Ferran Torres, who hit a hat-trick on matchday one as PSG thrashed Slovan Bratislava 6-1. There is even a transfer thread — PSG are monitoring Cherki, and the Frenchman faces them days after scoring at Anfield.

Off the pitch, the cloud lingers: the independent commission's guilty verdict on financial-rule breaches, which City deny and have appealed, with no sporting sanction yet imposed. On the pitch, though, this team keeps winning — a hostile Etihad awaits the holders.

PSG, for their part, remain formidable. Luis Enrique's side are unbeaten in their last 11 Champions League games and have won two of the last three meetings with City, including a 4-2 thriller in last season's league phase. Ousmane Dembele — scorer in five straight UCL appearances — and Nuno Mendes are back after being rested at the weekend, with only young Senny Mayulu a doubt. But history at this ground is against them: PSG are winless in four visits to the Etihad.

City have won four of the eight previous meetings, and the Opta supercomputer makes them 44.1% favourites. Expect goals at both ends.

Prediction: Manchester City 3-2 Paris Saint-Germain. Haaland outguns Torres in a classic.
