Luis Diaz Hat-Trick Fires Bayern Past Leipzig in Six-Goal Bundesliga Statement
Bayern Munich sent a message to the rest of Germany on Saturday: the champions are not going anywhere. Luis Diaz scored a brilliant hat-trick as Vincent Kompany's side dismantled RB Leipzig 6-1 at a bouncing Allianz Arena in one of the performances of the Bundesliga season. The Colombian needed just 12 minutes to open the scoring, latching onto Joshua Kimmich's magnificent through ball and finishing coolly in a one-on-one. When Harry Kane sprayed a pass wide to Diaz in the 26th minute, the winger turned provider, rolling the ball into the path of Aleksandar Pavlovic for a fine near-post finish. Eight minutes later it was three — Kane's deft lay-off finding Michael Olise, who curled home from the edge of the box. Leipzig were shell-shocked, and Bayern showed no mercy after the restart. Kane released Diaz two minutes into the second half and the Colombian bent a gorgeous finish into the corner. Then came the milestone moment: Nathaniel Brown squared for Kane to toe-poke home from close range on his 100th Bundesliga appearance — his 102nd goal in those 100 games, a scarcely believable record. Diaz completed his hat-trick in the 69th minute, finishing from the edge of the box after a short-corner routine involving Olise, before Andrija Maksimovic grabbed a late consolation for the visitors in added time. The numbers behind Bayern's front three are becoming absurd. Diaz now has a hat-trick to his name in a Bayern shirt, Kane has 22 goal involvements this season and has reached a century of Bundesliga appearances in record time, and Olise — a goal and an assist again here — sits on 20 goal involvements for the campaign. As Fabrizio Romano noted, Bayern are well and truly back on track. For Leipzig, billed pre-season as Bayern's closest challengers, this was a chastening afternoon. On this evidence, the gap between the champions and the rest is not closing — it is growing.
