Viking 3-3 Bayern: Norwegian Minnows Stun Europe in Six-Goal Thriller
On a freezing night in Stavanger, Norwegian champions Viking came within seconds of the most famous result in their history — leading Bayern Munich 2-0 at half-time before being pegged back to a breathtaking 3-3 Champions League draw.
Viking, playing in the competition after winning a first Norwegian title in 34 years, stunned the German giants after just two minutes when Gianni Stensness headed them in front. The home crowd could barely believe it when Peter Christiansen ran clear to double the advantage before the break.
Bayern, shell-shocked, roared back after the restart. Harry Kane dragged them into the contest with two goals, and when Luis Diaz made it 3-2, the great escape looked complete. But the drama was far from over — Michael Olise was sent off after picking up two yellow cards, and deep into stoppage time Herman Haugen popped up with a 90th-minute equaliser that sent the home supporters into ecstasy.
"We were dominant, but at the moment it feels like every chance for the opposition leads to a goal," admitted Bayern coach Vincent Kompany afterwards — a brutally honest assessment of a night when his side were outfought as much as outplayed.
For Viking, this was a statement to the whole of Europe: the Norwegian minnows belong on this stage. For Bayern, it is two points dropped in a game they were expected to win comfortably, and questions will be asked about their defensive fragility.
The result will be remembered as one of the great Champions League nights — proof that on any given evening, football's giants can be humbled.
